Create Your Impact Roadmap:
Theory of Change Canvas
Changemaking is a journey, but before you decide on the route to take (your strategy), you need a map of the terrain. A theory of change is this roadmap - a comprehensive analysis of the entire context you're navigating, with the crucial information about where you are and ways to reach your destination. A theory of change is dynamic and allows you to re-route your strategy as you learn more or encounter roadblocks.
The Theory of Change Canvas is a tool that empowers grassroots changemakers with a structured yet flexible framework to master theory of change, so that you can create impactful and sustainable interventions.

The ToC Canvas is divided into two halves: the foundational analysis (left hand side) and iterative components (right hand side).
The Foundational Analysis includes a preliminary analysis and clarification of: Vision, Problem, Solutions, Impacts, and Key Activities. Once you've done your foundational analysis, this is what we call a working theory of change, which is what you need before you start taking action and implementing anything.
Vision
What is your vision for the future?
What tangible changes would you need for this to manifest?
Which of these will your intervention focus on?
What will success look like for your intervention?
What will success look like for your target community?
Problem
What are all the problems or barriers between the current reality and your vision?
Which specific problem(s) are you trying to solve?
What are the root causes?
What are the symptoms of this problem?
Is this connected with other problems you identified?
What needs to change?
Solution
What are the potential solutions that could bridge the gap between your problem and move you towards your vision?
Which solution will you focus on and why?
How will your solution solve the problem?
What aspects of the problem will you not directly solve?
Impact
What are the specific results you expect from implementing your solution?
What are the objectives & goals that would indicate success?
How will you measure your success and impact?
What short, medium, and longer term outcomes might these changes lead to in the future?
Activities
What activities will you undertake in order to bring about your solution and the desired impact?
How do these activities contribute to your desired goals or objectives?
What are the steps involved for each of these activities?
What resources will you need to execute these?
The Iterative Components include gathering ongoing Evidence, with data and information about any Assumptions, Stakeholders, and External Factors. This is a dynamic process that allows you to refine your ToC throughout the entirety of the project, so you can adapt your strategy to maximise impact!
By leveraging the Theory of Change Canvas to guide the development and refinement of your theory of change, you can create more resilient, comprehensive, and effective strategies for achieving sustainable impact in your projects.
